Earth Day at Hudson River Park!

Event Description

Howdy y'all!

I'm trying to drag you country bumpkins down to the city to come gut our habitat garden for an Earth Day volunteer event. Tasks include:

  • Removing invasive plants such as Mulberry trees, Phragmitis, and other weeds.
  • Re-mulching the garden.
  • Defining the walking path.
  • Planting.
  • Clearing a congregation area and installing seating.

We're basically trying to beautify the space and make it more accessible for teaching opportunities. I told the head of the horticulture department that my friends in the SCA were a bunch of powerhouses, and he didn't believe me...so I say let's rub his face in it!

Logistics:

  • We'd be working from 10 am until noon, then from 1 pm until 3 pm.
  • We'll be working alongside public volunteers (no more than 30 of us, total)
  • Don't forget to:
    • Dress in layers and expect to get dirty
    • Wear closed-toe shoes (ideally work boots or sneakers)
    • Bring water
    • Bring a signed waiver with you to the event

If you want to participate, email volunteer@hrpt.ny.gov or call (917) 661-8731 and give your name, phone number, and email. We will then send you a waiver that you gotta sign and bring with you on April 22nd.

[Secret] side note: If you guys want to come out the day before (Sunday), I can have people stay the night in my sizable apartment with me. You might have to sleep on the floor, depending how many people come. That way you can experience a bit of the city and night life! Could be a nice change from being alone in the woods, if that's your situation (which I so desperately miss). Parking is no issue on my block.

Feel free to email me with any questions! Thanks for reading!

So it begins...

Today, May 22nd, I begin my SCA journey. This morning I woke up to find an email from SCA crews; I had received a summer national crew placement. I honestly had given up hope since my availability dates were so limited, so I didn't expect to get a placement, but luckily I was proven wrong. I opened the email on my phone and my eyes went immediately to "congratulations". I quickly began skimming the email for the important details, location and dates. Well turns out I'll be heading to Alaska,…
